Just back from the 2014 Association of University Interior Designers Conference (AUID) in Seattle, Debra Barresse is gearing up for the second year of her presidency of the AUID. (Debra was too modest to mention it, but she also won “Best Renovation Over $150k” for her recent work on MacLean House.)

“Good design, for me, is more than a visual experience,” said Barresse. It is about creating physical environments that allow the user to successfully interact within that space; assisting them in learning, teaching or working. To achieve this I spend time getting to know my clients as thoroughly as possible, asking a myriad of questions and observing their work. The result of this inquiry and research is a diverse set of environments that are connected visually, but speak to each occupants individual needs – this is what makes my job most interesting!”

“As President of the AUID I have been able to become more involved in the global way Universities approach design. As University designers we all have similar experiences in a very particular environment. Networking and sharing these experiences allows us to spread the word on lessons learned as well as successful new products that work well in our environments. Our membership is growing by double digits every year which makes it is even more exciting for me to lead this organization.”
