7/12/18 UPDATE: We are extending the steam system shutdown impacts into Monday, July 23 since the restoration of steam may not reach all buildings until midday on Monday. We again thank you for your patience.
Each year Facilities conducts a steam system shutdown to safely perform necessary and routine maintenance. This year the shut down will affect fewer buildings, however, the complexity of the projects requires a multi-day shutdown from Thursday, July 19 through Sunday, July 22, 2018.
During the summer, steam is used for domestic hot water, some types of clothes dryers, laboratory autoclaves, commercial kitchens, and for space re-heating after the cooling coils have dehumidified the air. We recommend you have a sweater or jacket on hand to stay comfortable with possible cooler inside temperatures. Since steam will not be available to re-heat cool, dehumidified air, a particularly humid day can cause even cooler inside air temperatures.
- Thursday, July 19 through Sunday, July 22, 2018
- Buildings on the east side of campus (see list below)
- Thursday, July 19 only
- Maeder Hall
- EQuad J wing
- EQuad G wing/Energy Research
- EQuad H wing/Von Neumann
- Limited or no hot water in affected buildings on the east side of campus, please plan accordingly
- Cooler than normal temperatures, and more humid, especially in labs and some offices
We expect to return to a 24-hour campus-wide steam shutdown next year, typically scheduled on the Thursday following commencement each year to minimize the impact on our campus community. Thank you for your cooperation and we apologize for any inconvenience this maintenance may cause.
