To ensure the safety of our campus, most of the exterior doors on our buildings have electronic locks with access granted using a TigerCard when the building is locked. All residential dormitories have electronic locks which are locked at all times.
Beginning Fall 2017, we are excited to offer additional access to classroom spaces after-hours while maintaining building security. The advantages this change offers to the University community include the following:
- Increased access to academic classroom spaces.
- Enhanced personal safety with accessible, yet locked, buildings.
- Established hours for visitors and guests.
- Reduced need for unlock requests.
Recognizing work days for some of us may end later than 6:00 p.m., the typical time when the University locks its buildings, you will now have TigerCard access to electronically controlled buildings from 7:00 a.m. until midnight during the week and from 7:00 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. on weekends. This change will allow more access to classroom spaces after-hours and enhance building security. Each building with electronic locks has at least one Building Access Coordinator that helps manage exterior and interior electronic lock access.
We encourage all TigerCard holders to carry your TigerCard with you, especially now that you can gain access to classroom buildings (list below) after-hours.
Classroom Building Standard Hours
- Weekday access from 7:00 a.m. until midnight
- Weekend access from 7:00 a.m. until 8:30 p.m.
- University libraries are unlocked during library hours. For library hours and access information, please visit the Princeton Library website.
- Buildings will remain locked during University holidays & campus closures unless the building department requests open hours
Troubleshooting card access
Current faculty, staff and student TigerCards will automatically include clearance authorization to access buildings during the TigerCard extended hours listed above. There is no need to update a Prox/TigerCard or hit a Hot Spot for the standard classroom building after-hours access. If you have trouble accessing a classroom building during extended hours, please contact TigerCard by email at [email protected], by phone at 609-258-8300, or in person at the TigerCard Office located in New South, A Floor, from Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Please be aware DPS/Housing Loaner cards will NOT allow Prox/TigerCard extended hours access to classroom buildings.
Unlock Requests for Events
If you have an event scheduled after hours or on the weekend and expect attendees outside the campus community, please work with the Building Access Coordinator of the building to submit an unlock request form. The unlock request form alerts Facilities as well as Public Safety of the need to unlock the building for your event.
As always, be sure to clean up classrooms and common areas after using them by placing your garbage and recyclables in the appropriate receptacles and returning furniture to where you found it. Keep our buildings safe by not propping open any exterior door for others without a TigerCard.
Q&A Classroom Building Standard Hours
Q: Why is the University establishing standardized hours for buildings with classrooms?
A: Currently, the University does not have standardized hours for when buildings with classrooms open and close. We realize our classrooms provide an important setting for academic success. Therefore, we are establishing standard hours with extended TigerCard access to classroom doors, while at the same time enhancing campus safety.
Q: What are the new standardized hours for buildings with classroom spaces?
A: Beginning September 13, 2017, most electronically controlled classroom buildings will be open until 8:30 p.m. and have extended TigerCard access during the academic year as follows:
- Weekday access from 7:00 a.m. until midnight
- Weekend access from 7:00 a.m. until 8:30 p.m.
During official University holidays and campus closures, the buildings will remain locked unless the building department requests open hours. During the week University libraries will be open to the public from 7:00 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. and then remain accessible to P.U. cardholders. TigerCard access will start at 8:30 p.m. and end when the library closes (times vary).
Q: Which buildings can I access after-hours and on weekends?
A: There will be access to the exterior doors of most electronically controlled buildings with classrooms. While not every building with a classroom will follow standard hours (e.g., no residential dorms) there is a list of buildings with classroom space (below) that can be utilized late in the day and on weekends.
Q: What rooms can be used inside the buildings?
A: Registrar classrooms inside buildings should be unlocked 24/7 in support of our students who study at all hours. Many interior doors will be locked, however, such as laboratories and department classrooms, with access limited and controlled by a Building Access Coordinator.
Q: What are the expectations for using a classroom space after hours?
A: As always, be sure to clean up classrooms and common areas after using them by placing your garbage and recyclables in the appropriate receptacles and returning furniture to where you found it. Keep our buildings safe by not propping open any exterior door for others without a TigerCard.
Q: How will my Prox/TigerCard provide me access into buildings after 8:30 p.m.?
A: Effective on the first day of classes, September 13, 2017, current faculty, staff and student TigerCards will automatically provide clearance authorization to access buildings during extended hours from 8:30 p.m. to midnight during the week and from 7 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. on the weekends, during the academic year. There is no need to update a Prox/TigerCard or hit a Hot Spot for this access, because the current access will not change – however, you will need to carry your TigerCard with you at all times to take advantage of building extended hours. BACs can approve extended hours to faculty, staff and students for their designated building(s).
Q: What if my card does not work to access a building with classrooms?
A: Contact TigerCard by email at [email protected], by phone at 609-258-8300, or in person at the TigerCard Office located in New South, A Floor, from Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
Q: What if I lose my ID Prox/TigerCard?
A: Contact TigerCard by email at [email protected], by phone at 609-258-8300, or in person at the TigerCard Office located in New South, A Floor, from Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Please be aware DPS/Housing Loaner cards will NOT allow Prox/TigerCard access to classroom buildings.
